Kalimuendo Scores as Forest Earn Nostalgic Win Over Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” echoed around the stadium as Forest supporters reveled in a further win against Malmö. Much has transpired since Francis's decisive header secured the European Cup in the year 1979, but Forest continue to treasure those glorious moments. Similarly, significant shifts have taken place in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest looking refreshed and earning a comfortable victory courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of advancing in the European competition.
Gaining Steam with Another Consecutive Victory
For Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after ending sixth in their home competition – marked a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the positive energy generated from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this match was a reminder of Forest’s historic triumph in spirit, the game itself was free of any significant tension or nerves.
It proved to be an event filled with sentiment, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive meeting between the teams since the European Cup final 46 years ago.
Forest leaned into the history, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their visiting counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Malmö's team from then were also in attendance. Both teams shared a meal together before the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates were given a tumultuous welcome when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a typically impressive tifo was shown in the home stand.
Recalling the Past
“30th May 1979, John Robertson delivered the ball from the left,” read one part of a large tifo, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what happened next, the remaining section was unfurled as the squads came out from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it stated. Another stunning display depicted Brian Clough observing events beside his assistant Peter Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.
Dominance from the Start
So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was strong, too. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an effort off target inside the opening moments and built a 2-0 lead by the break. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.
It felt fitting that Yates, who came to the club aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defence captained by their own academy product skipper, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a opponent and into the pathway of Yates, who swept home right-footed from the edge of the penalty area to score his maiden strike since last March.
Another Goal Seals Control
The scorer was involved in Forest’s second goal on the verge of the interval, too, his unmarked header saved by the shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to convert the loose ball from close range. James McAtee, the playmaker handed a rare start and just his second outing since September, was the catalyst, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.
A minute earlier, Hudson-Odoi’s driven shot was deflected aside off the back Rösler, son of former Manchester City striker Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic had earlier had a strong header instinctively saved by Ellborg, who was back in place of the former Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
Malmö’s Struggles
This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on 9 November, and they found it hard to match Forest’s energy. The Reds extended the lead to three when the defender applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a set-piece. Yates had a shot stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.
The home side then pushed for more, with the winger dinking a effort on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an optimistic effort off target from distance. It was one of those nights. Dyche, aware of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented seven changes from the team that stunned Liverpool at their ground recently, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs during the second half.
Smooth Night for the Team
It turned out to be a hiccup-free night for Forest. Dyche could take off the defender with the game long since sewn up and subsequently introduced 19-year-old full-back Sinclair for his senior bow. He discussed the Forest old guard supplying “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad showed they are capable of a few nuggets of excitement, as well.
