‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s path from injury table to success with Athletic Bilbao

Thehe first time Gorka Guruzeta competed in English soil, an teenage appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at Adams Park in fall 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he appeared in British turf, against Sunderland weeks after, he converted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, sure enough, he scored again. As he revisited to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. A spectacular strike, as well. “In fact,” he says, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I was furious,” the attacker admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the second half: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Man United, the typical thing. I’m not certain how true it was, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the training ground, Bilbao, the morning session is about to start; after it, the brief trip to the airport and a further journey to England, this time to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on midweek. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. This is proving a challenging campaign for the team, partially owing to the demands of being here. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in the continental stage. However, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a final at home by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway flanked by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are distinctive and debuting in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he admits.

Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the opposition side, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced Mikel Arteta, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at 17 but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he suffered a torn cruciate, being released, a demotion and a recall before he could earn his place, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the top level but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his debut and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I suffered the ACL injury.

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as something positive because it made me change the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it helps. You adopt practices new to you. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, you have everything, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All the minor details: do them.

“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles countless occasions. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved in tears in that year, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone where you play, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks savor the moment. All the more so after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
